Arriving in Italy

Leaving Marco Polo Airport in Venice…

What a trooper! Cindy just spent three days and over 1,000 kilometers in the car to visit both Colorno near Parma and Jesi near Ancona where I will be staying. This was the start of a six month journey for both of us.

She is now on the plane to Basel and I am driving south.

I stopped for lunch in Arzirini a bit east of Padua as I realized that there may not be a restaurant open when I get to Jesi. Had an amazing bacalau dish baked al forno with some cima di rape.

Always fun to try the local wines. I found an interesting wine made from 100% Durrello grapes.

This is usually used for sparkling wine and not made into a still wine. It was a well structured white wine with a lovely floral and peach in the nose. The producer is Marcato.

Driving the long way along the Adria, I passed through the River Po estuary.

I have never been in this area and I was struck by how similar it was to the San Joaquin Delta.

Many of the same crops were planted and lots of canals. Of course there is no eel fishery in California, so the hundreds of fishing houses with nets on long poles over the rivers and canals would not be seen in the California Delta.

I arrived in Jesi around 19:00 and settled in.

Language school starts tomorrow and the adventure begins.
